Google AI Overview

A Google AI Overview is an AI-generated summary shown at the top of some search results, above the traditional list of links. Google began rolling AI Overviews out in the United States in May 2024 and has expanded them since; they now appear on a large share of queries.

What it is

An AI Overview reads the search results, writes a summary, and cites the pages it drew from with inline links. It appears above the organic list, so it changes what a searcher sees before they see any blue link.

How it picks sources

It cites pages it can parse and verify: direct answers, plain facts, consistent information. Pages that lead with the answer to the exact question are the ones with a chance of being quoted.

What it means for clicks

Studies of queries with AI Overviews show fewer organic clicks, because the answer is already on the page. But the pages an Overview cites gain the referral — being quoted is the new ranking, and it is won by answer-first content, not by tricks.

Can you pay to appear?

No. There is no paid placement inside an AI Overview. Anyone claiming otherwise is mis-selling. What you can do is make the content quotable and the facts verifiable.

Questions

Do AI Overviews show on every search?

No. They appear on many, but not all, queries — Google tunes where they show. Informational questions are the most likely triggers; navigational and urgent local searches often show the classic results.

How do I check whether an Overview cited my page?

Search the query yourself and read the citations. At scale, track referrals from google in your analytics — Overview citations send visitors to your site like any other result.
