Responsive design is the practice of building one website that reflows to fit any screen — phone, tablet, desktop — instead of shipping a separate mobile version. The same HTML serves every device, and the layout, type and images rearrange themselves around the width in the visitor's hand.

What it means

One site, many screens. The page detects the available width and re-lays-out: columns stack, menus collapse, images resize. Nothing is downloaded twice and no separate "m." site exists to keep in sync.

Why it is table stakes

Most small-business traffic now arrives on a phone, and Google ranks with the mobile version of the page. A site that only works on a laptop is not a small inconvenience — it is invisible to the majority of the people searching for you.

How to check a site

Drag your browser window narrow, or open the page on a phone. Look for: text you can read without zooming, buttons a thumb can hit, no sideways scrolling, and nothing overlapping. Our repair list starts with exactly these failures.

What it costs

Nothing extra when it is done from the start — responsiveness is a method, not a feature. Retrofitting it onto an old fixed-width site is real work, and it is the first item on most redesign quotes. See redesigns and repairs.

Questions

Is responsive design the same as mobile-friendly?

Mobile-friendly is the goal; responsive design is the main way to get there. Some sites fake it with a separate mobile site or a pinch-to-zoom page — responsive design means the same site genuinely reflows, which is what search engines check.

Does responsive design slow a site down?

It can, if a page loads the desktop-sized images and scripts and merely reshapes them. Done properly, the responsive site serves appropriately sized assets per device — which is faster than either a fixed desktop page or a separate mobile site.
