Mobile-first design

Mobile-first design means designing for the phone screen first and enhancing up to desktop, rather than shrinking a desktop layout down. For most small businesses the phone is the majority of traffic — a trades visitor in the rain is not waiting for a hero film — so the small screen gets the design decisions, not the leftovers.

What it means

The order of work changes: the phone layout is designed first, with the least space and the slowest connection, and the desktop version adds richness on top. What survives that filter is what the page was always meant to say.

Why the phone comes first

Because that is where the customers are. Local searches — the plumber, the restaurant, the roofer — happen on phones, in the moment, often one-handed. A site designed for a laptop and squeezed down keeps the laptop's priorities: big images, wide layouts, fine print. Mobile-first keeps the customer's.

How it changes the build

Content is prioritized: the four answers every visitor needs come first.
Images and video are sized for small screens and slower signals.
The enquiry route is a tap away, not buried under a menu.
Motion is an enhancement, never the mechanism.

How to check

Open the site on a real phone, on a real connection. If the answer to "what do you do, and how do I reach you" needs a scroll hunt, the site was designed on a desktop. Our repair lists start with these failures.

Questions

Is mobile-first the same as responsive?

No. Responsive design is the technique — one site that reflows to any screen. Mobile-first is the design order: phone first, desktop second. A site can be responsive but still desktop-first in spirit, which is why we build the other way round.

Does mobile-first design cost more?

Not when it is the default method — it is how we build, so it carries no premium. Retrofitting a desktop-first site for phones is where the cost hides, because the decisions were made in the wrong order the first time.
