Content management system (CMS)
A content management system (CMS) is software that assembles web pages from a database when a visitor asks for them — WordPress, Drupal and Joomla are the best known. It is the alternative to hand-written files: the page you see is generated on the server, which makes editing easy and adds a moving part that must be maintained.

What it is
A CMS stores content (text, images, settings) in a database and builds each page when it is requested. You edit through an admin dashboard, and the software does the HTML for you. That is the entire appeal: people who never touch code can run the site.
The trade-off
The database and the editing software are moving parts. They release updates, they can be vulnerable when neglected, and the page that reaches the visitor carries the platform with it — more code to download, more to keep patched. A hand-written site has neither problem.
CMS vs hand-written files
A CMS wins when many people edit often and content changes daily. Hand-written files win when the site is small, mostly read, and rarely changed: nothing to patch, nothing to rent, nothing between the visitor and the page. Most small business sites sit closer to the second case than the first.
What to check before choosing one
- Who owns the hosting and the database — you, or the platform?
- What happens to your content if you leave (can you export it)?
- How often does the platform release security updates, and who applies them?
Questions
Is WordPress a CMS?
Yes — the most widely used one. It is a database-driven platform with a dashboard, which is exactly what a CMS is. The same trade-offs apply: easy editing, plus updates, plugins and hosting to maintain.
Do I need a CMS for a small business site?
Usually no. If you edit prices or a menu weekly, a small editor added to a hand-built site can cover it. A full CMS earns its keep when several people publish daily — otherwise it is moving parts you did not ask for.
