Web hosting
Web hosting is the service that keeps your website files and serves them to visitors. For a hand-built static site it is often free or a few dollars a month, because there is no database or server-side code to run — and like the domain, the hosting account should be registered in your name.

What hosting does
Hosting is the computer (server) that holds your files and answers every request: a visitor's browser asks for a page, the server sends it. Your domain points at the host, so the two work as a pair — the address and the building.
What a static site needs
Very little. Hand-written HTML, CSS and JavaScript need no database and no server-side processing, so they run fine on basic file hosting — frequently free, or a few dollars a month. The expensive tiers exist for databases, traffic spikes and platform software your static site does not have.
What it costs
For a static site: often free, or a few dollars a month. Compare that with what a pay-monthly builder bundles in — the platform licence, the hosting and often the "support" — for around $120 a month, about $4,300 over three years, with the site coming down if you stop paying.
What to check before you commit
- The account is in your name, and you hold the login.
- You can move the files to another host any time (a static site can).
- Uptime and support are stated, not promised in adjectives.
Questions
Is free hosting any good?
For a hand-built static site, often yes: there is no database to strain and little beyond files to serve. Judge it on uptime, speed and whether the account is yours — a free tier in your own name beats a bundled "free" host locked inside a builder.
Can I change hosts later?
A static site moves trivially: copy the files to the new host, point the domain, done. That portability is one of the reasons we hand-build — a platform site, by contrast, can be hard or impossible to move, which is exactly what the monthly fee is renting.
