Why do web designers charge a monthly fee?

Web designers charge a monthly fee for one of two reasons: either you are paying for genuine ongoing work (monitoring, security patches and content edits), or you are renting the website itself on a pay-monthly contract where the site comes down if you stop paying. Always ask which one you are being quoted.

The short answer

There are two completely different business models that both look like a monthly invoice. One is optional upkeep on a website you already own; the other is a lease where you never own the code or design until a multi-year buyout, if ever. Knowing the difference before you sign saves thousands over three years.

Model 1: Renting the website (pay-monthly builds)

Many agencies advertise "$0 down, $120 a month" websites. The pitch is low upfront cost; the catch is that the agency owns the template, the hosting account and often the domain setup. Over three years at $120 a month you pay $4,320, and if you cancel in month 37, the website is switched off.

Model 2: Optional upkeep on a site you own

The alternative is paying once for the build, owning the code and accounts outright from handover day, and only paying monthly if you want someone to monitor uptime, check domain renewals and make regular content changes. If you cancel that upkeep plan, your website stays live because it is yours.

How we separate the two

Every Firmitas build is paid once and owned by you, with zero monthly fee required to keep it online. Our optional care plans ($45, $119 and $159 a month, no contract) cover monitoring and a written allowance of updates, and you can pause or cancel them any month without losing your site. Questions

What happens if I cancel a pay-monthly website designer?

On most pay-monthly website contracts, cancelling the subscription takes the website offline and you leave with only your text and logo. Always ask in writing what you keep if you stop paying after 12 or 24 months.

What are the only unavoidable recurring costs of a website?

Your domain name renewal (roughly $10–$20 per year) and hosting (free to a few dollars a month for a static site), both paid directly to your own registrar and host rather than marked up by a designer.
